A while later, I rolled toward Simon, brushing my wet hair out of my face. He’d carried me to the shower after we could both breathe again, and I’d stood beneath the hot water as he washed my skin. He’d given me a bandage for the bite mark on my thigh. Now, we lay naked next to each other as the first rays of sunlight crept into the sky.

“Are you awake?” I whispered.

His eyes fluttered open and were full of amusement. “Yes, my darling.”

I beamed at him. “I’d like to take you up on your offer to take me to Versailles today.”

“I thought you were going with your sister?” he asked, boosting himself up on one elbow.

I shrugged. “I want to go with you.”

Simon watched me for a moment and took a deep breath. “Alright, Lucinda, I will take you. Get some rest first, please.”

I wrinkled my nose. “I’m not tired.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Clearly, I did not do a good enough job fucking you, then.”

I laughed. “You did great. I feel exhilarated.”

He rolled forward, kissing me deeply. “Shut your eyes and go to sleep.”

I squeezed them shut dramatically with a laugh. “It’s not working.”

“Impossible woman.”
